Bee Auburn is back in 2018!

The Auburn University College of Agriculture and the City of Auburn are teaming up to host Bee Auburn 2018, a weeklong celebration of pollinators and their impact on our culture, health, history society and economy beginning June 18 and ending June 22. Leading the state of Alabama in pollinator-related education and activities, Bee Auburn has worked with local and state officials to start the conversation about these important animals and declare Auburn Pollinator Week and Alabama Pollinator Week, coinciding with National Pollinator Week.

Over the course of the week, Bee Auburn will host activities around Auburn to raise awareness regarding pollinators. A complete schedule of events and activities is listed below:

Monday, June 18: Community Dinner at the ALFA Building: Join us for lab tours, demonstrations and a FREE dinner provided by Tacqueria Y Carniceria Durango. This event will be held at the ALFA Agriculture Services and Research Building (located at 961. S. Donahue Drive). Pre-registration is required. Visit https://campscui.active.com/orgs/CityofAuburn?orglink=camps-registration to register by Friday, June 15 at 5 p.m.

Tuesday, June 19: Tropical Pollination Bites: Stop by The Bean Coffee Shop between 7 and 9 a.m. for tropically-inspired breakfast bites and a chat with the AU Department of Entomology’s pollination ecologists about tropical pollination. Bites and chats are FREE!

Tuesday, June 19: Tea and Teacups: Join us at Dean Road Recreation Center for an evening of painting, tea and fun with this Bee Auburn – affiliated event. Painters will be able to create a one-of-a-kind floral bisque mug with Art Education Specialist Cari Cleckler and learn about tea pollination with AU Medicinal Plant Garden coordinator Tia Gonzales. This event is FREE but registration is required and space is limited. Registration will be at the Harris Center (425 Perry Street).

Wednesday, June 20: Night at the Museum: Visit the Auburn University Museum of Natural History from 6 – 8 p.m. and tour the exhibits and learn about the research happening in our own backyards in relation to pollination. At 8 p.m. (weather permitting), Bee Auburn staff will lead a nocturnal pollination walk through the Donald E. Davis Arboretum. Night at the Museum will also feature a research showcase by Auburn students from the Colleges of Agriculture, Forestry and Science and Mathematics. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Thursday, June 21: Lights, Camera, Pollinators! Photography Workshop: Join Auburn University Research Fellow Dr. Charles Ray as we explore the AU Medicinal Plant Garden and learn the best methods for capturing pollinators on film. This workshop will be from 5 – 7 p.m. and is free and open to members of the public ages 12 and older. No equipment will be provided, so students should plan to bring their own camera or devices. No registration is required. Students should meet at the ALFA Agriculture Services and Research Building (located at 961 S. Donahue Drive).

Friday, June 22: Bee Auburn 2018: Join us for a pop-up, interactive science museum at the Arboretum from 5:30 – 8 p.m.! There will be 13 different and interactive exhibits and activities (with information available in English, Spanish and Korean) to make pollination fun – from the nuts and bolts of pollination to food samples to free giveaways of some of pollinator’s favorite flowers and plants, there’s something for everyone to enjoy – adult and kid alike! Among exhibitors present, Active Auburn and College of Agriculture are teaming up for Pollinator Walks through the Arboretum, which will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. and will begin on the hour at 6 and 7 p.m. Signage will be posted at the event to direct event goers to the starting point. Local vendors will be set up in the Pollinator Shop area (Arboretum parking lot) for event patrons to peruse and purchase from during the course of the event and Scoops Italian Ice will be on-site with sweet treats for purchase. Bee Auburn, the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center and Auburn Arts Association will also play host to world-renowned mosaics artist Frederic Lecut for a mosaics workshop at the Pavilion. The mosaics workshop is open to students ages 13 and older. The workshop is free, but space is limited. Registration will take place on the day of the event at the Pavilion beginning at 5 p.m. and the workshop will be held from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

NOTE: Registration will be required for Tea and Teacups, a Sip N’ Paint event, and space is limited to 20 participants ages 21 and older. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required and space is limited.
